Before considering the role of defensive structures on the territory of Karabakh as
architectural monuments of Azerbaijan, it should be noted that there are a significant number of them.
When studying the defensive structures of Karabakh from the point of view of their purely military,
i.e. functional side, we should not forget at the same time that they are also architectural monuments.
Fortresses were inseparable from settlements, and defensive structures became one of the most
important elements of the architectural composition of the city. Since ancient times, the connection
between fortresses and settlements has been even closer and inextricable. Each more or less large
settlement was protected by a fortress wall, behind which the settlement was located. The city as a
fortress and the city as a settlement were closely linked together. Thus, defensive structures occupied
a very significant place in the formation of Karabakh architectural ensembles. First, these are
