THE FUTURE OF SMART AND SUSTAİNABLE CİTİES: A GLOBAL PERSPECTİVE ONINFRASTRUCTURE INNOVATİON

Abstract

As cities face increasing demands for climate resilience, rapid urbanization, and digital
change, infrastructure innovation becomes a crucial element for sustainable urban futures. This study
examines the changing frameworks of smart and sustainable cities from a global perspective,
highlighting the essential contributions of planners, politicians, and urban innovators in developing
adaptive, inclusive, and technologically connected infrastructure systems. The lecture, anchored in international policy frameworks like the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the New Urban Agenda,
and ISO Smart Community Standards, elucidates how multi-level governance, citizen engagement, and public-private partnerships are transforming urban infrastructure. Utilizing innovative urban models
from Singapore, Songdo, and Masdar City, it demonstrates scalable approaches in retrofitting, digital twins, nature-based solutions and resilient mobility systems. The lecture emphasizes the relationship
between physical infrastructure and digital ecosystems, focusing on data-driven governance, ethical technology integration and equitable infrastructure. It concludes by redefining infrastructure as not
only physical assets but also as dynamic, socially integrated systems that promote long-term urban sustainability, adaptability and equity in an increasingly interconnected world.
